At the Stake |
 |
John Huss
Huss had been ordered to Prague to answer for his faith.
The Emperor Sigismund promised him a safe conduct, but did not keep his word. When Huss
reminded him of his promise--Sigismund blushed scarlet and all at the trial
saw it.
After a long trial, in which he maintained the truth and
no one could prove him wrong, Huss was required to choose whether he would
recant his doctrines or suffer death. He chose the martyr's fate, and after
seeing his books given to the flames, he was himself burned at the stake. In
the presence of the assembled dignitaries of church and state, the servant of
God had uttered a solemn and faithful protest against the corruptions of the
papal hierarchy. His execution, in shameless violation of the most solemn and
public promise of protection, exhibited to the whole world the perfidious
cruelty of Rome.

Pagans often point to these things and claim that
'Christians' burned witches at the stake. No doubt a few genuine witches may
have perished this way, a very few, but by far the majority of flaming stakes
held genuine, Bible loving Christians. Often accused of being witches, their
only crime was refusing to give up Bible truth and bow to the ecclesiastical
hierarchy. Only God knows the number of millions who paid the ultimate
price for their faith.

The Bible was hated, and efforts were made to rid the
earth of it. The people were forbidden to read it, on pain of death; and all
the copies which could be found were burned. But I saw that God had a special
care for His Word. He protected it. At different periods there were but a very
few copies of the Bible in existence, yet He would not suffer His Word to be
lost, for in the last days copies of it were to be so multiplied that every
family could possess it. I saw that when there were but few copies of the
Bible, it was precious and comforting to the persecuted followers of Jesus. It
was read in the most secret manner, and those who had this exalted privilege
felt that they had had an interview with God, with His Son Jesus, and with His
disciples. But this blessed privilege cost many of them their lives. If
discovered, they were taken to the headsman's block, to the stake, or to the
dungeon to die of starvation.

A faithful Christian was about to suffer martyrdom for
his faith. A brother Christian had been conversing with him in regard to the
power of the Christian hope--if it would be strong enough to sustain him while
his flesh should be consuming with fire. He asked this Christian, about to
suffer, to give him a signal if the Christian faith and hope were stronger
than the raging, consuming fire. He expected his turn to come next, and this
would fortify him for the fire. The former promised that the signal should be
given. He was brought to the stake amid the taunts and jeers of the idle and
curious crowd assembled to witness the burning of this Christian. The fagots
were brought and the fire kindled, and the brother Christian fixed his eyes
upon the suffering, dying martyr, feeling that much depended upon the signal.
The fire burned, and burned. The flesh was blackened;
but the signal came not. His eye was not taken for a moment from the painful
sight. The arms were already crisped. There was no appearance of life. All
thought that the fire had done its work, and that no life remained; when, lo!
amid the flames, up went both arms toward heaven. The brother Christian, whose
heart was becoming faint, caught sight of the joyful signal; it sent a thrill
through his whole being, and renewed his faith, his hope, his courage. He wept
tears of joy.

James Baynham, a reputable citizen in London, chained to
the stake he embraced the fagots, and said, "Oh, ye papists, behold! ye look
for miracles; here now may you see a miracle; for in this fire I feel no more
pain than if I were in bed; for it is as sweet to me as a bed of roses." Thus
he resigned his soul into the hands of his Redeemer.

"And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and
by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the
death." Revelation 12:11
". . but the people that do know their God
shall be strong, and do exploits. And they that understand among the people
shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by
captivity, and by spoil, many days." Daniel 11:32, 33.
