DRAMA OF THE AGES:
4. A TEST IS GIVEN
The newly formed couple were
told they could freely eat of the fruit of all the trees in the garden, but
one tree in the center of the garden they were told not to eat of it.
It was called the 'Tree of the
Knowledge of Good and Evil' and God told them that in the day that they
would eat of that tree, they would be under the sentence of death!
Now God had to give Adam and
Eve a chance to demonstrate their loyalty. Would they obey God and live? Or
would they choose otherwise. The test was made as easy as possible, just one
tree out of thousands was to be left alone.
They also knew that it was
only at this tree that the rebel angel would be allowed to tempt them. It
would be so easy just to stay away from it.

All was well for a time, but
one day Eve wandered from her husband's side intent on exploring the garden.
When she realized she was alone, she felt an uneasiness. She remembered that
some of the angels of God had warned her to remain with Adam and so the two
of them would be safer than if they were alone.
Now she almost starts back,
but then a bit of arrogance comes in. 'I can take care of myself!' She
realized she was not all that far from the forbidden tree and decided to
have a closer look.

It was there she was accosted
by Satan speaking through the medium of a lovely serpent. The questions were
asked, and the lie was told, sad to say, Eve chose to believe the stranger
rather than trust & obey her Creator.
Adam was not deceived at
first, but he chose to side with Even rather than obey his Maker. They both
fell and in so doing they sold out to the rebellion. Earth became the
'Planet in Rebellion'! As soon as they chose to disobey the Law of God, they
lost the covering of light that had been their only garment.
Now they found themselves
naked and afraid. Seeking to cover themselves they wove fig-leaves together
and made aprons. But a terrible sense of dread prevailed and when they heard
the voice of God in the evening, instead of racing to join him, they hid in
the bushes.
Finally they answered the call
and in response to God asking them what they had done, they blamed each
other and indirectly blamed God as well. Adam, who before he sinned
thought he loved Eve more than life itself, now blamed her, and she blamed
the serpent and God for creating the serpent.
Solemnly God pronounced a
curse on the serpent, from then on it would crawl legless upon the earth.
But in the curse there was a cryptic prophecy. The very first Messianic
promise.
"And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel."
Genesis 3:15
Now why didn't they die on the
spot? Because the mysterious plan of Salvation, a secret known only to the
Godhead, was immediately implemented. The plan was that the Creator
Himself would be the surety for the fallen race.

As soon as there was sin,
there was a Savior! He was the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
The Creator was now on death row so they could have a second chance to obey.
Someday the Creator would be born as a child of a
woman, and He would life a life of perfect obedience, then die as a law
breaker. He would be the seed of the woman that would crush the serpent's
head. Anyone who chose to accept the provision could be forgiven of their
past sins, and chose to return to perfect allegiance through the Divine
power made available .
God gave an object lesson to
help them understand.
